What are invisible aligners? 

Invisible aligners are modern, transparent, custom-made trays that gradually straighten your teeth. Every 1 to 2 weeks you switch to a new set, which moves your teeth a little further each time. Because the aligners are transparent, they are barely noticeable. 

How does a treatment with invisible aligners work? 

A treatment with invisible aligners follows a number of fixed steps: 

1. The first consultation
   During the first consultation, we discuss your wishes and look at the position of your teeth. We assess whether aligners are the right solution and calmly explain all the options. 
2. Intraoral scan and treatment plan
   Would you like to start? Then we schedule a 3D scan and take X-rays. With these we draw up a complete, tailor-made treatment plan. 
3. Discussing the expected end result
   Based on the scan, we show you a video or simulation of the expected end result. Once you agree, the invisible aligners are made to measure. 
4. Fitting the first invisible brace
   We fit the first set of aligners and explain how to wear and look after them. From this moment on, you wear them 20 to 22 hours a day. 
5. First check-up after 2 weeks
   After two weeks, you come back for a check-up. We look at whether everything is going well and answer any questions. You can always reach us in the meantime on 030 760 1267. 
6. Regular check-ups
   You receive new sets of aligners and change these every 2 weeks at home. Every 6 to 8 weeks you come in for a check-up of your progress. 
7. Wearing a night-time retainer
   Once you have achieved the desired result, you receive an invisible night-time retainer to maintain the effect.

The cost of an aligner treatment at our practice in Utrecht 

The cost of an aligner treatment differs from person to person. In advance, you receive a clear cost estimate in which all costs are explained. We only start once you agree.

Reimbursement for your aligner treatment 

The costs fall under orthodontics. The basic health insurance usually does not reimburse this, but with supplementary dental insurance a (partial) reimbursement is sometimes possible. Check your policy conditions or contact your health insurer. 

Risks of aligners 

Zoals bij elke orthodontische behandeling kunnen er risico’s zijn. Deze zijn zelden ernstig, maar wel belangrijk om te kennen:

• slight shortening of tooth roots or damage to a tooth nerve; 
• sometimes removal of teeth or molars, or a surgical procedure, is needed; 
• increased risk of cavities, gum inflammation and discolouration with poor oral hygiene; 
• not wearing them according to instructions can adversely affect the end result; 
• teeth may shift slightly again in the long term afterwards. 

Although the risks are small, it is important to start well informed. Please feel free to discuss any questions with your dentist.

How long does an aligner treatment take? 

On average, a treatment takes between 6 and 18 months, depending on the position of your teeth. 

How many hours a day do I have to wear aligners? 

For an optimal result, you wear the aligners 20 to 22 hours a day. Only during eating, drinking (except water) and brushing your teeth do you take them out of your mouth. 

What should I not do with aligners? 

Can I kiss with aligners? 

Yes, that is perfectly fine. The aligners are thin and smooth, so they are barely noticeable or bothersome. 

Do aligners hurt? 

Usually not. However, during the first few days of a new set you may experience slight pressure or sensitivity. This is normal and quickly wears off.
