When is a bridge needed?
There are several reasons to have a bridge fitted:
- A bridge improves your chewing function by replacing a missing tooth or molar.
- A bridge improves your smile and the appearance of your teeth.
- A bridge contributes to the stability of your teeth and prevents teeth and molars from shifting or drifting out of position.
The bridge treatment
Just as with a crown, a bridge is also fitted over two or three appointments. In broad terms, the treatment proceeds as follows:
1. Preparing the surrounding teeth
The surrounding teeth are shaped slightly to create room for the bridge. This is done under anaesthetic, so it is painless.
2. Taking impressions
Next, a bite impression is taken. Based on this impression, the dental laboratory will make the bridge.
3. Determining the colour of the bridge
During the third step of the treatment, you determine the colour of the bridge together with the dentist. This way we match the natural colour of your teeth, so that the bridge will later be indistinguishable from the real thing.
4. Fitting a temporary bridge
To protect the open space, the dentist places a temporary solution in your mouth. This temporary bridge is fixed in place and already gives you an idea of what the final bridge will look like. It also ensures that the teeth and molars are protected until the dental technician has made the permanent bridge.
5. Fitting the permanent bridge
During the final appointment, the dentist fits the permanent bridge.
If your own teeth or molars are not suitable for supporting a bridge, an implant can sometimes be an alternative. Implants are placed in the jawbone as an artificial root, after which a crown or bridge can be attached to them.

What is a bridge?
A bridge makes it possible to replace one or more missing teeth or molars. A bridge is a fixed construction that rests on abutments. The abutments are on both sides of the missing tooth and are shaped slightly to make room for the bridge construction. The abutments are fitted with a crown that is connected to a dummy (pontic) that ‘bridges’ the open space of the missing tooth or molar.
What types of bridges are there?
In dentistry, three types of bridges are used:
- A regular bridge, where the bridge is attached to the abutments on either side of the missing tooth.
- A cantilever bridge, where both abutments are on one side of the missing tooth. Here the bridge is attached to the abutments that lie to the left or right of the open space.
- A resin-bonded bridge (Maryland bridge), which is fitted when the surrounding teeth are still in good condition. The bridge is then bonded to the back of the adjacent teeth.
Is the treatment painful?
The treatment is carried out under anaesthetic, so you do not feel any pain. It is possible that you experience sensitive teeth and molars after the treatment, but this can be managed well with a painkiller. If the sensitivity persists or gets worse, please contact our practice.

In general, a bridge lasts well over 10 years. However, the lifespan of a bridge depends on the material and your personal oral hygiene. Good oral hygiene contributes to its durability.
